As the Korean War raged, the Soviet Air Forces placed into service almost 300 examples of the Tu-4, which NATO assigned the reporting name of ‘Bull’. The Soviet Air Forces considered it a medium-range strategic bomber due to its range of about 3,400 miles. There was no in-flight refuelling option at that time.

Bomber Nomenclature

In the general context of aircraft types, a strategic bomber’s primary role is to fly to the enemy’s homeland to destroy its war-making capabilities such as factories, logistics infrastructure and military installations. The shorter-range tactical bombers destroy the enemy’s battlefield weapons and support systems such as command posts and airfields. Taken from a USAF publication is a passage on the intersection of tactical and strategic bombing:

Strategic and tactical actions are not necessarily tied to specific geographical areas, operating environments, or types of vehicles. An air commander may employ any or all of his assigned forces to produce integrated strategic and tactical effects to support the overall objective . . . Strategic and tactical actions are not mutually exclusive and to consider one in isolation of the other disregards their interdependence and their synergistic influence in warfare.
